Razorpay is India's most widely used payment gateway, known for its developer-friendly integration, strong brand recognition, and breadth of payment methods. Cashfree is the challenger โ often cheaper on transaction fees, faster on settlements, and stronger on payouts and disbursements. For most D2C Shopify stores starting out, Razorpay's ecosystem and support make it the easier choice. For brands that care about settlement speed (T+1 or T+2) and keeping transaction costs low at scale, Cashfree often wins on the numbers.
Razorpay is a Bangalore-based payment solutions company founded in 2014. It offers a payment gateway, payment links, subscriptions, smart collect (virtual accounts), payroll, and banking (Razorpay X current accounts). For D2C ecommerce, its gateway supports UPI, cards, net banking, wallets, EMI, BNPL (Buy Now Pay Later), and COD management. Standard transaction fee is 2% for domestic transactions (no setup fee for most account types). Razorpay processes payments for brands like Urban Company, Zomato, and thousands of Shopify stores.
Cashfree Payments (now rebranded as Cashfree) is a Bangalore-based payment and banking technology company founded in 2015. Alongside payment gateway services, it's particularly known for its Payouts product (bulk disbursements, vendor payments, refunds). Its gateway supports UPI, cards, net banking, wallets, and EMI. Standard transaction fees are 1.75% for domestic transactions (cards and net banking), with UPI fees varying by volume. Cashfree processes payments for brands like Nykaa, Dunzo, and EaseMyTrip.

Transaction fees are the primary cost for D2C brands:
Razorpay:
Cashfree:
The 0.25% difference on cards and net banking may seem small, but at โน1 crore/month in card transactions, it's โน25,000/month โ โน3 lakh/year. At โน10 crore/month, it's โน30 lakh/year. For high-volume D2C brands, this is a real cost difference worth evaluating.
Both gateways offer volume discounts โ if you process โน5 crore+/month, direct negotiations with either gateway typically bring rates below standard pricing.
Settlement speed affects working capital, especially for brands with thin margins or high COD volumes.
Razorpay's standard settlement cycle is T+2 (two working days after the transaction date). Razorpay Route (advanced routing product) and Razorpay X customers can access T+1 settlement. Instant settlement (within minutes) is available for an additional fee (typically 0.5โ1%).
Cashfree's standard settlement is T+1 for most transaction types, which is faster than Razorpay's default. This is one of Cashfree's most cited advantages โ for brands moving โน50 lakh+ per day through the gateway, having funds a day earlier meaningfully improves cash flow.
Both gateways support instant settlement for an extra fee, which is useful during high-GMV events like Diwali sales, Independence Day offers, or flash sales.
Both Razorpay and Cashfree have official Shopify apps in the Shopify App Store.
Razorpay's Shopify integration is well-documented and widely used. It supports all standard Shopify checkout flows, including Shopify Payments alternative configuration. It handles refunds, partial payments, and order status syncing back to Shopify.
Cashfree's Shopify integration is similarly capable. Its checkout widget is clean and supports all major Indian payment methods. Some Shopify merchants report that Cashfree's webhook reliability has improved significantly in recent versions, addressing earlier issues with order status sync delays.
For WooCommerce stores, both gateways have robust plugins. For custom-built ecommerce stores on React, Vue, or native mobile, both provide well-documented REST APIs and SDKs.
The payment gateway you choose affects the back-end cost of transactions. But what happens before the customer reaches checkout โ how you present pricing, show EMI options, display trust signals, and design your checkout flow โ can have a much larger impact on how many customers complete their purchase.
A 1% conversion rate improvement on a store doing โน1 crore/month is โน1 lakh in additional revenue per month. That's more than most brands save by switching payment gateways. Showing UPI as the default payment option, adding EMI calculators on product pages, or simplifying your checkout form are all testable changes that can lift revenue without touching your payment infrastructure.
If you're evaluating Razorpay or Cashfree for your D2C payments stack, you'll also want an A/B testing tool for your checkout flow. CustomFit.ai integrates with Shopify and lets you run no-code experiments on your checkout pages โ testing payment method prominence, trust badges, and checkout step simplification. Is Razorpay or Cashfree safer for Indian D2C brands? Both are RBI-authorised payment aggregators. Neither poses meaningful safety concerns for standard ecommerce use.
Can I use both Razorpay and Cashfree on the same Shopify store? Technically yes, but most stores use one primary gateway. Some brands use Razorpay for their Shopify store and Cashfree for payouts/refunds.
Which supports international customers better? Both support international cards. Razorpay has broader international payment method coverage. For non-Indian customer bases, both also support Stripe or PayPal as additional options.
Does Razorpay charge for refunds? Razorpay does not charge additional fees for refunds, but the original transaction fee is typically not refunded on a reversal.
What is the minimum transaction volume for negotiating better rates? Both gateways typically start custom rate discussions around โน1 crore/month GMV. Meaningful discounts (below 1.5%) usually require โน5 crore+/month.
